Customer Challenges

Financial services corporations can be responsible for upwards of millions to trillions of dollars in assets, meaning these corporations need tight, reliable security systems in place. One of the many ways that financial institutions keep their organizations and assets secure is through security cameras in and around their facilities.

For one financial institution, many of their surveillance cameras are located outdoors throughout parking lots at hundreds of facilities across the country. With security cameras spread out across so many investment center locations, managing and powering all of the security cameras remotely can be difficult. This makes managed, Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) switches an ideal solution for powering these cameras. The financial institution engaged Transition Networks and its Managed Hardened Gigabit Ethernet PoE+ and PoE++ Switches to support its security cameras in buildings and parking lots across 200 investment center locations.

Customer Solution: Transition Networks’ Hardened Ethernet Switches and Device Management System

After evaluating their obstacles the financial institution knew they needed switches that allowed for remote management while also being small enough to fit into exterior cabinets without taking up too much space. With these challenges in mind they turned to Transition Networks and their Managed Hardened Gigabit Ethernet PoE+ Switch (SISPM1040-384-LRT-C) and Self-Enclosed Managed Hardened Gigabit Ethernet PoE++ Switch (SESPM1040-541-LT-xx Series) since both of these switches have built in device management systems which improve uptime and management of the connected powered devices (PDs).

The Device Management System (DMS) Software embedded into the SISPM1040-384-LRT-C provides time-saving features enabling the financial institution to establish and document a baseline deployment and automatically discover and remotely configure attached IP-addressable PDs. Through various views, such as a graphical topology view, floor view, or using Google Maps™ mapping service, the financial institution could easily locate and keep track of these devices.

The SESPM1040-541-LT-xx Series is equipped with Near Field Communication (NFC) to allow simple and repeatable configuration of the switch with a user-friendly mobile app. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) allows remote access to alarm information or to read or change equipment settings without requiring physical access using ladders or scissor lifts. The switch also incorporates integrated management software for setup, monitoring, and control of connected devices.

The remote location of the cameras added another layer of difficulty to make even the basic physical troubleshooting like camera rebooting another challenge. To resolve this, Transition Networks’ Auto Power Reset (APR) feature, which is used to monitor and automatically restart the devices in the event of lock-ups, glitches or power failures, saving on truck rolls to remote locations for simple rebooting of the attached powered devices, is included in the management software of both switches.

Since one of the other obstacles of the financial institution was the need to power cameras in the parking lots at its 200 investment centers, the switches needed to fit in a parking lot pole cabinet. The small size of the SISPM1040-384-LRT-C switch allows it to be inconspicuously installed, even deployed within an LED street light panel, and the SESPM1040-541-LT-xx Series is able to be installed directly onto the light pole itself.

The Products

There were two switches from Transition Networks that met the customer’s need for supplying power and data to IP security cameras and remotely monitoring / managing all of the powered devices on the network.

The SESPM1040-541-LT-xx Series is a Layer 2 managed switch with (4) 10/100/1000Base-T IEEE 802.3bt (Class 8) compliant PoE++ ports and (1) combination 10/100/1000Base-T RJ-45 or 100/1000Base-X SFP port, that is ideal for use in security and surveillance applications. The switch is available in multiple configurations as either an AC- or DC-powered power source and is self-enclosed in an outdoor NEMA 4X/IP66 rated enclosure with 6KV surge protection on each power port. The switch can be mounted on a wall or side of a building, or optional brackets are available for mounting on a pole.

The SISPM1040-384-LRT-C is a managed hardened Gigabit Ethernet PoE+ switch that can supply up to 30 Watts per port on all (8) ports simultaneously. The switch features a slim form factor, full front-access design, and is environmentally hardened to withstand temperatures ranging from -40°C to +75°C.

Customer Benefits

Managing a nationwide network of security cameras and access control across 200 investment center locations is possible thanks to the management features and performance of Transition Networks’ hardened switches.
