IPC Information Systems provides industry-leading managed connectivity solutions to financial institutions globally. Its comprehensive network services are specifically designed for the exacting demands of capital market participants, and connects over 200,000 traders worldwide, reaching virtually every trading destination around the globe.

To deliver fully resilient voice services, connecting financial traders and brokers with their clients and counterparties, IPC required a technology platform that would enable resilient TDM services over its Ethernet-based wide area network. More significantly, IPC was seeking a technology supplier with which it could develop a close, co-operative relationship; one based on true collaboration and a commitment to deliver the highest levels of performance.

The Project

IPC’s clients expect high availability and network stability for the voice services delivered to their users. To achieve this, IPC needed a product that would enable highly-reliable, accurately-clocked TDM services over its Ethernet, IP and Fibre links. Additionally, IPC’s Network Services team required a solution that offered straightforward deployment and implementation, comprehensive remote management and traffic monitoring & shaping capabilities.

IPC undertook a formal evaluation process of several products, comprising initially of evaluation within a lab environment. The PacketBand TDM product successfully met all evaluation criteria, and entered the second stage, consisting of beta trials within IPC’s network.

On completing the evaluation, IPC selected the PacketBand TDM-TDM-32 and TDM-4 platforms for several reasons, including stability, system performance, fail-over capability and remote management features. IPC experienced no errors or failures with the PacketBand equipment during the exhaustive testing phase.

Benefits

The PacketBand system enables IPC to support traditional E1/T1/V.11/V.35 TDM applications using lower cost Ethernet, IP and Fibre networks. These cost savings over traditional leased lines mean IPC can deliver essential voice services in a highly competitive market.

Operationally, IPC will benefit from rapid deployment and seamless integration of PacketBand into its existing networks and TDM infrastructure, whilst a centrally managed platform incorporates advanced statistics and alarms for service level/circuit monitoring. Customer bandwidth can be monitored and shaped enabling IPC to tailor its service delivery to individual customer requirements.

To maximise availability, Transition Networks’ products help IPC benefit from and very fast fail-over recovery in the event of an Ethernet connection being lost. These features and capabilities are critical to IPC’s Network Services team, as they underpin IPC’s ability to deliver industry leading customer service and support.

“We have judged the product selection across cost, performance and security as well as the relationship with Transition Networks themselves. The PacketBand product and business approach from Transition Networks has been extremely pleasing. Working in the financial sector we need reliable, secure products as well as strong and integrated vendor partnerships. Transition Networks and their PacketBand product series offer IPC everything we need to deliver upon our customer service solutions.”

- Richard Petrie, IPC’s Vice President of Network Operations, EMEA

Next Steps

IPC and Transition Networks will continue to develop their relationship by bringing new problemsolving ideas and solutions to the IPC business. IPC is looking to expand its use of the PacketBand TDM product beyond EMEA to meet its customers’ requirements globally. The product is currently being evaluated for deployment in IPC’s Asia and North America regions.
